Power Agreement

For centuries, civilizations have harvested the power of wind. Clean and renewable wind power has lifted the wings of aircraft, filled the sails of countless ships and powered windmills worldwide. Now Lyon-Lincoln Electric is bringing the power of wind to your home through PrairieWinds.

Although our Prairie Winds energy program is the first of its kind for Lyon-Lincoln, it joins many other successful wind programs throughout the country. These programs are already transforming even the softest breezes into powerful electricity.

By investing in another clean source of power, we are investing in our future. But perhaps most important, by taking a leadership role in supporting renewable energy, we are contributing to a healthier environment for this generation ... and the next.

How to Participate

You, too, can participate by becoming a wind energy pioneer! In order to justify new wind turbines, we need to know which of our consumers are serious about buying wind energy. We are asking our consumers to make a one-year commitment to purchase wind energy in 100 kilowatt-hour blocks for just $.40 each per month. No charges will be made to your account until the wind turbines are up and running.

Fill out the Prairie Winds Power Agreement indicating your commitment to the PrairieWinds energy program.

Q. What is PrairieWinds?

PrairieWinds is a program being developed by Basin Electric Power Cooperative and its member electric cooperatives, including Lyon-Lincoln, to offer electric cooperative consumers wind-generated electricity.

Q. Why is this program being offered?

Many members of electric cooperatives have indicated they want wind as an additional environmentally clean, energy option. Choosing wind energy is your opportunity to make a positive environmental choice that will conserve our natural resources for future generations.

Q. How will the wind power be produced?

Wind power will be produced using large wind turbines. The number of turbines will be based on the number of consumers who choose to subscribe to the service.

Q. How will the wind power be delivered to my home?

Electricity generated by PrairieWinds will be fed into the overall power supply system. Electrical energy to your home will then be drawn from the overall electrical supply system. Of course, consumers cannot be sure that the electrons flowing into their homes were generated by wind power. But they can be assured their commitment is helping to support the generation of renewable energy using our abundant local wind as a resource.

Q. Will power to my home or business depend on the wind blowing?

No. Your power will continue uninterrupted.

Q. Will wind power cost more?

Yes. Although wind power is affordable, it still costs more than electricity produced by hydropower or by coal. The main reason is the relatively high cost for the wind turbine, and the fact that it can only produce when the wind blows.

The extra cost of wind power will be passed directly through to the consumers who take part in the program. The wind power will cost an additional $.40 for each 100 kilowatt-hour (kWh) block purchased per month.

Q. Is PrairieWinds available to all cooperative members?

Yes. Whether you live in a house or on a farm, or whether you own a business that has its power supplied by Lyon-Lincoln Electric, you can sign up for PrairieWinds and save resources and support renewable energy.

Q. How does this program affect people who do not subscribe?

The goal of this program is to have no impact on those who do not participate. Many consumers are pleased to know that their electricity is produced by hydropower and by the most efficient and cleanest burning coal-based power plants in the United States. This program is for consumers who want more from their power supply and are willing to pay a little extra to support wind power.

Q. What is the schedule for the PrairieWinds project and where will it be located?

There are a number of wind power projects under construction within the Basin Electric service area.

Q. How will I know what's happening with the project?

Wind power consumers will receive reports as the project progresses. Information will also be posted at Basin Electric's web site: www.basinelectric.com.

By investing in another clean source of power, we are investing in our future. But perhaps most important, by taking a leadership role in supporting renewable energy, we are contributing to a healthier environment for this generation … and the next.
