The earth has a handy property that makes geothermal systems possible -- year-round temperature stability. During the winter, when the earth is warmer than the air, heat is extracted from the ground and transferred to your home. In the summer, the processed is reversed and the system removes heat from the home and puts it back in the earth.
Geothermal systems come in many styles to fit different needs and land space available. As illustrated here, they can be a vertical loop system, horizontal loop system or slinky loop system.
There are two types of ground source systems: closed loop system and open loop system. The closed loop system is a series of wells or loops. A food grade glycol solution is circulated through these pipes to transfer heat from the ground to the home. The solution then goes to the heat pump, which transfers the heat to the home. An open loop system uses well water to run through the system. Well water is supplied to the heat pump and then discharged into a drain field.
